Abstract:
A watching brief was undertaken by Exeter Archaeology on the works associated with the provision of a new transfer sewage pumping main between Silverton Mill pumping station (NGR SS 97659 00913) and the Silverton Sewage Treatment Works (NGR SS 95963 02538) via a proposed pumping station at Ellerhayes (NGR SS 97610 01713). The pipeline route extends for approximately 3.5 km through an area of known prehistoric archaeological potential identified from aerial photographs. Notable was a suspected prehistoric enclosure in Field 4 at NGR SS 29690 101888 on the pipeline route; the pipeline was re-routed to the west to avoid direct contact with this feature. No features of prehistoric date were identified in the monitoring excercise although a quantity of worked flint was recovered from topsoil stripping of the wayleave with the greatest density occuring in the field with the suspected prehistoric enclosure. This field also produced a number of undated ditches and pits within the pipeline wayleave.
