Abstract: |
August to September 2004. Oxford Archaeology carried out a field evaluation at Monkton Heathfield, Taunton, Somerset. A geophysical survey had previously been carried out on the development site and was used to determine the eventual layout of the evaluation trenches. Archaeological evidence in the trenches was limited to ditch features and areas 1, 2 and 3 were largely devoid of archaeological features. Archaeological features were identified within areas 4 and 6, and are likely to represent field boundaries of post-medieval date. Two sherds of Iron Age pottery were found within one of the ditches in area 4. Areas 5 and 7 revealed potential areas of archaeological significance. Several ditches of prehistoric date ranging from the middle Neolithic to the Iron Age were identified within Area 7. This suggests the presence of significant prehistoric activity, which is previously unknown around the Taunton area. A possible enclosure and occupation area of Roman date was identified in area 5. |
