Abstract:
Excavation of a 1 hectare site and 250m long access road revealed a palimpsest of archaeological remains dating from the Neolithic to the post-medieval period. A series of pits were excavated and backfilled in a structured way in the Neolithic, a similar pattern was identified for the middle Bronze Age, with a large posthole perhaps being a totem or marker for the area. In the later Bronze Age a small ring ditch was dug, left open for a period of time, before a gully was excavated around the east half of the ditch, possibly forming a wooden screen. The open ditch on the west side of the monument was then filled with burnt material, pottery and animal bone, identified as possibly the remains of feasting. In the later Iron Age a series of farm enclosures were built across the landscape. These were maintained into the Romano-British period before being abandoned, probably at the end of the 2nd century AD. A track that ran between enclosures was metalled, probably during the Roman period. A chalk quarry pit was later dug on the site, probably during the post-medieval period
