Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation for a proposed school annexe building was carried out at St Mary's Prep School, Melrose. The proposed development area lies within the Scheduled area associated with Melrose Abbey and consequently, was subject to Scheduled Monument Consent. Trial trenching led to the identification of a short length of possible wall and a short length of possible stone bank. Both of these features were in very poor condition and did not extend into the adjacent trenches. The excavation uncovered a multi-period site within the scheduled area of the Abbey Precinct. The principal features include the remains of a kiln and a number of ditches. The kiln survives as a large pit with a floor composed of re-used sandstone blocks and medieval floor tile in cruciform shape, with evidence for a draw hole/stokehole. Preliminary comparative analysis suggest it may have been a lime kiln. The initial assessment of the tile suggests a late 13th /14th C date. A large ditch, in the region c. 5m wide by 1.5m in depth, runs across the site. This ditch is further respected by a secondary ditch, on the same orientation as the first, with the fragmentary remains of a later earth and stone bank sealing both ditches and probably dating to the post-medieval period. Other features and deposits included a series of intercutting pits of unknown purpose and post-medieval garden soils.
