Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was maintained during topsoil removal in advance of quarrying of phases 5 and 6 at Town Farm, Burlescombe. The site was located immediately to the east of the site of a 7th-8th AD century timber lined springhead and Bronze Age burnt mounds excavated in 2003. The principal features exposed consisted of two intercutting pits and a hearth or cooking pit. Radiocarbon dates obtained from charcoal recovered from the fills of these features gave a date range of 1890-1620 cal. BC for the two pits and 2130-1890 cal. BC for the cooking pit. The site produced an assemblage of sherds from at least five vessels dating to the Bronze Age. The quantity of pottery recovered, largely from the two pits, is particularly significant given the lack of ceramic dating evidence recovered during the previous excavation of the adjacent site. Although the evidence for settlement on the site during the Bronze Age is limited, such evidence is typically sparse for this period throughout lowland areas of the Southwest. These features and the associated pottery, therefore, represent significant evidence of Early Bronze Age occupation. |
