Abstract: |
The site lies to the immediate north-east of the medieval walls of the historic town of Totnes, close to the East Gate. It may also lie just outside the Saxon burgh that existed at Totnes from the 9th century. It was therefore considered possible that associated remains or deposits of medieval or earlier date might survive within the footprint of the development. The evaluation consisted of a 6m x 1m trench excavated across the footprint of the development. This identified only deep soil layers containing a mixed medieval and post-medieval finds assemblage. A watching brief was maintained during the subsequent ground reduction across an area measuring approximately 10m x 15m to the south-east of the existing house. This extended to a depth of 3.1m at the south-west end of the development. No archaeological features or dating evidence was found to indicate early medieval activity within the site. The earliest finds, two fragments of Low Country floor tile, date to the late medieval period, with the rest of the assemblage indicating a post-medieval date for the deposition of the soils. |
