Abstract: |
Ten evaluation trenches in and around the former Co-Op building and its adjacent surface car park uncovered three large tanning pits of the 17th century, close to the north bank of the River Sherbourne under a considerable buildup of previous garden soils. There were also traces of 19th-century industrial buildings, in particular a silk dye works and a malthouse. These remains are traceable on the 1851 Board of Health Map of the City. Beneath . |
