Abstract: |
South West Archaeology monitored a metal detection survey at Polmear Parc that identified a total of 63 anomalies of which 30 were considered to be non ferrous in nature. Of the latter, 11 were excavated providing a representative sample and yielding a group of finds of between 19th and 21st century date. No evidence for 17th century military activity was identified within the proposed development site despite the recovery of such material from adjacent fields to the east by a recent programme of survey, suggesting that it was located on the periphery of the fighting that occurred in the vicinity of Tywardreath. Further, the anomaly distribution was essentially random and did not suggest the presence of buried archaeological features. Thus, no heritage assets of any significance were identified and it is concluded that, from the perspective of the Battle of Lostwithiel, the proposed development will have minimal impact on the historical environment. |
