Abstract:
During a round of Derelict Land Reclamation funded work undertaken at Geevor mine during the early 1990s, the securing of New Mexico Shaft revealed parts of a shallow underground adit system which was subsequently developed as an underground visitor tour for this heritage site. This proved very successful, though limited in capacity. As part of the Discover the Extraordinary project established by the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site Team in 2009, proposals were drawn up for the extension of the visitor tour through the clearance of further sections of tunnel. Scheduled Monument Consent was granted for these works, during which HE Projects Cornwall Council undertook a consultancy and watching brief. Following clearance, the installation of structural supports, drainage and lighting works, the extended adit system was opened to the public during Easter 2011. The works revealed further sections of these early shallow mine workings, including near-surface stoping, hand picked tunnels and a small mine shaft linking both to surface and down into as yet unexplored shallow levels within the mine. In the absence of firm evidence no date can be assigned to these workings, though given the proximity of the stoping to surface these are likely be early 18th century in date, possibly earlier. Several undated pieces of shaped timber were recovered from the tunnel fills. Currently backfilled extensions of the tunnels into ground upslope to the south-east have the potential to reveal further important information concerning the early development of the mine, and may include potentially-useful dating evidence.
