Abstract:
This report describes work undertaken in 2006, through the Historic Environment Service's Scheduled Monument Management Programme, to help alleviate a range of problems at Madron's holy well and chapel. This is a well-known site, attracting many visitors, but whose condition had deteriorated over the decade prior to work taking place. Aspects tackled as part of this project included: a poor parking area (muddy, rutted, puddles, litter bins, fly tipping), muddy access path, hampered for the less able by mud, puddles and a difficult stile, access to the holy well mostly under water, due to poor drainage, holy well stonework damaged, a damaged and unsightly interpretation at the chapel site, chapel subject to periodic vandalism, required some consolidation, chapel enclosure overgrown and untidy, chapel enclosure inaccessible to less-able people due to a stile, and degraded hedges at the chapel site. Part of the project involved some research to establish the causes of flooding in the area of the well - a problem which makes access difficult nowadays compared to the situation only twenty years ago - and found to be due to neglect of watercourses once Madron Well ceased to be a main supplier of water for Penzance and Madron Churchtown.
