Abstract:
In response to the Museum of Lancashire's planing application to install a drainage pipe and new path at St Mary's Church, Preston, Lancashire (NGR SD 548 296), Lancashire County Council Archaeological Services (LCCAS) placed an archaeological component on the planning consent due to the possibility of disturbing graves. A watching brief was conducted on the removal of five grave slabs, which were thought likely to have brick-graves underneath with one or more burials within them. Upon removal of the grave slabs it was evident that graves did exist at a greater depth, but were simply cut into the natural. The burials themselves were evidently located at a greater depth than the disturbance caused by the development. The graves, therefore, were left in-situ with the area covered in a woven fabric prior to the laying of the path. The groundworks for the installation of the drainage pipe encountered no further burials. No further archaeological work was recommended.
