Abstract:
Further survey work was carried out in four areas - the area between the house and chapel, the east wall of the dining room, the east wall of the living room and the attics. The east wall of the dining room: The removal of modern panelling revealed a fireplace and side cupboards. The upper brickwork appears to be of C19th date, the fireplace was mid C20th. The east wall of the living room: The fabric of the wall separating the living room and barn shows a complex sequence of multi-phase alteration that is not readily comprehensible. There is a blocked window, which appears to have originally been a doorway, a flue (presumably serving a stove), water pipes and several fireplace openings. The blocked area between the storeroom and chapel: The north wall of the store was broken through: this revealed a narrow wedge-shaped passage of peculiar and complex form. There were timber beams, brickwork of various dates, some stonework, brick plinths, etc. It appears that a small pantry was created by dividing off part of the store, but it is hard to understand how the different elements relate to the joint with the chapel. The report says, "the opening of the passage room has led to as many questions as answers". The attics: The western part was impossible to survey due to very heavy insulation. The eastern part, though retaining original rafters and purlins, had a rebuilt roof structure.
