Abstract:
In 2002 a programme of archaeological fieldwork was carried out by ULAS in advance of proposed development at Sherrard Street, Melton Mowbray on behalf of Flittermann Investments for Richard Morris Associates. The site is located close to the medieval core of the town and the medieval market cross (SMR 71 NE AQ) is located 70m to the west. Roman and medieval remains (SMR 71 NE BS) are also located 60m to the west. A desk - based assessment (ULAS Report 2002-115) confirmed the potential for archaeological remains in the vicinity and an evaluation was subsequently undertaken between 25th April, 29th April-3rd May and 6-7th May 2002 (ULAS Report 2002-86). Three trenches were excavated, providing a 3.45% sample of the development area. Saxon/early medieval to late medieval pottery was recovered from a number of features, which indicated the presence of some activity dateable to these periods. Well-preserved survival of the archaeological deposits associated with properties and boundaries dating from the 18th century onwards was also revealed. A short programme of archaeological excavation followed, undertaken between 7th-21st June 2002. This revealed further well-preserved remains of street frontage and backyard archaeology, in the form of pits, ovens and hearths, walls and floor layers, relating to domestic and industrial occupation, dating from the medieval through to the post-medieval period. The archive will be held at Leicestershire County Council, Heritage Services, under accession number XA76.2002.
