Abstract:
Excavations on land off Stapleford Road in Whissendine in 2003 revealed evidence for extensive multi-period occupation and hint at changing settlement patterns particularly in the later periods. The partial remains of a mid to late Iron Age settlement were identified, comprising successive roundhouses, large enclosure ditches and a set of intermittent ditches, which might be part of a stock management system. There was less evidence for Roman and post-Roman landuse but intense settlement and agricultural activity took place in the late Saxon and medieval periods. By the late medieval phases, structural archaeology seems to be largely confined to the Stapleton Road frontage, which may reflect a change in farming practices and shrinkage of the settlement. The archive will be held by Rutland County Museum under the Accession number R.A29 2003.
