Abstract:
A programme of historic building recording and survey was undertaken by ULAS on behalf of B and S Glasse Ltd, of agricultural buildings within the cartilage of Shawell Hall, Shawell, Leicestershire (SP 5425 7965). The majority of the farm buildings, including stabling, cattle and cart sheds appear to date to the 19th century and were subject to photographic survey. The threshing barn, a Grade II listed building, has a fine diminished principal rafter roof structure, with clasped purlins, a form which can be dated typologically to the late 15th /early 16th century. Inspection of the surviving timbers, carried out as part of a Level 2 survey, indicates that the building originated as a fully timber framed structure and was subsequently rebuilt in brick, probably during the 17th century. An archaeological watching brief carried out during the groundworks associated with the residential redevelopment of the site, revealed that the barn had been constructed with substantial stone footings at its northern end only, to compensate for a steep slope in the topography of the site. A single pit revealed during the excavation of new foundation trenches yielded a deposit of broken bottle glass, dating to the late 17th / early 18th century.
