Abstract: |
University of Leicester Archaeological Services were commissioned to undertake an archaeological watching brief during the restoration of the Stop Lock and re-watering of the Upper Arm at Foxton Inclined Plane, Leicestershire. The Upper Arm and Stop Lock were constructed at the turn of the twentieth century along with the adjacent Inclined Plane in order to bypass the congested Foxton Locks. The Inclined Plane only remained in operation for 10 years, and the Upper Arm was abandoned and dammed in 1928 after which it was allowed to fall into dereliction. The Inclined Plane is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument. On the whole the structure of the Stop Lock was in very good state of repair, reflecting its short period of use. There is evidence that tight budgetary constraints influenced the materials used during construction. |
