Abstract: |
In 2003/4 the Archaeology Service, Shropshire County Council, undertook a survey of the Stiperstones Hills in south Shropshire to identify and assess the archaeological resource of this area. The known archaeology of the area is characterised by prehistoric monuments of the early Bronze Age (cairns) and the Iron Age (the Castle Ring hillfort on Oak Hill) on the ridge top, and by post-medieval mining remains and associated squatter settlements (mainly) on the on the lower slopes. Recent field inspections however, had shown that the small number of known archaeological sites and monuments on The Stiperstones hills greatly under-represented the actual number and complexity of sites within this landscape. The study area was chosen to investigate an upland area generally above the 350m contour line, and includes all of the English Nature designated Stiperstones National Nature Reserve. The Stiperstones Survey comprised desk-based research followed by a rapid field survey using Global Positioning System (GPS) survey equipment. |
