Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation by trial trenching was undertaken at a site at Station Road, Stainforth, as a condition of planning consent. Six evaluation trenches were located at random locations across the development site. No archaeological remains were encountered within any of the trenches. The evaluation revealed that the site had previously been stripped of topsoil, subsoil and any sand or gravel overlying the clay natural, with ground levels subsequently reinstated by industrial dumping. This was apparent in all but one of the trenches. It is unlikely that any archaeological remains, with the exception of very deeply cut features within the underlying natural, would be preserved under these conditions. |
