Abstract:
This report assesses the archaeological resource and potential of a proposed development area (PDA) in the historic village of West Melton, South Yorkshire. The PDA is a rectangular plot of land (2.51 hectares) that fronts (100m) onto Melton High Street. The PDA contains a number of historical standing buildings and some historically demolished. As part of this assessment two historically demolished farmsteads, east of Highfield Farm were identified within the PDA. Highfield Farm probably dates to at least the late 17th/ early 18th century. The demolished buildings in particular 'Old Hall Farm' did appear to be earlier, from the at least the 17th century, and the site still remains of importance. Nine buildings within the PDA were standing in 1773 and of these three still survive but six were historically demolished. No previous archaeological work has taken place within the village of West Melton, and its archaeological potential has never been investigated. There is therefore, an unknown potential for further unknown archaeology within the PDA. Further work in the form of a building record and evaluation is recommended.
