Abstract:
A programme of works undertaken to refresh the Grassmarket, Edinburgh and its approaches was monitored by an archaeological watching brief. Prior to this programme of works the Grassmarket was assumed to have been unoccupied in prehistoric and early medieval times with little evidence for occupation prior to 1477 when the area was granted a weekly market by James III. A basic stratigraphic sequence was found to be recurrent throughout most of the site with a series of old ground surfaces, typically cobbled, and associated occupational deposits lying over an extensive, homogenous colluvial deposit. This deposit represents the ongoing process of material washed downhill from the slopes below Castle Rock and the upper High Street. Beneath the lowest deposit of hillwash lay the natural subsoil into which prehistoric and Dark Age features were cut. Deposits of archaeological significance were encountered to a depth of 2.3m below the modern ground surface. Key finds included prehistoric features dating to the Middle Bronze Age, features and deposits dating to the Anglian occupation of Edinburgh (7th-10th century AD), the medieval ground surface and town wall, and several post-medieval ground surfaces, stone culverts and structures, including the 19th century Corn Exchange building. A bomb crater from a high explosive device dropped from a World War I German navy zeppelin was also encountered. The Dark Age features are of particular interest as they expand on our understanding of the development of pre-burghal Edinburgh and may be indicative of more extensive occupation in the area than previously thought.
