Abstract:
Headland Archaeology conducted a programme of archaeological works on the site of the former salt pan works at Joppa after the north western corner of the seawall that had collapsed due to storm damage. The programme of works comprised historic building recording of the walls exposed due to the collapsed sea wall. This was follwed by a desk based assessment, and a geophysical survey of the area prior to an intrusive evaluation at the site. The work was commissioned by Edinburgh City Council. Although the geophysical survey was inconclusive, in conjunction with the historical maps it helped to located the position of the trenches. Six trenches were excavated in total and revealed a number of wall foundations and a poorly preserved tank wall close to the north end of the site. Unfortunately no floor surfaces were revealed and no artefacts associated with the salt pan works survived.
