Abstract:
In January 2011, North Pennines Survey CIC, commissioned by Storey Land and Development, undertook geophysical surveys of land adjacent to Manor Farm, Manor Road, Barrow-in-Furness (centred on Ordnance Survey grid reference SD 1258 7148), prior to a proposed residential development at the site. The archaeological work was required as the proposed development lies within the Conservation Area for Furness Abbey, which is designated a Scheduled Monument and Listed Building, as well as being within an important medieval landscape. The documented medieval settlement of Sellergarth and early 16th century deer park may also exist on or close to the site. Geomagnetic surveys covering 2.66ha of land were conducted within 2 pastoral fields to the on the northeast side of Barrow-in-Furness. The remains of several archaeological features of interest were recorded, including a possible trackway between Abbey Park and Newbarns village, and two field boundaries of possibly medieval date. Further work was recommended.
