Abstract: |
Archaeological watching brief maintained during groundworks associated with the creation of a new footpath at the south end of Bitts Park, located in close proximity to Carlisle Castle, a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The groundworks consisted of the machine excavation of a 275m long by 2m wide trench, to a depth of between 0.10-0.20m. The only features revealed were related to modern drainage. Finds were all of post medieval date consisting of pot and glass sherds, suggesting the area may have been used as a rubbish tip and spread over the park, as seen in previous interventions near the castle. No archaeological remains were identified. |
