Abstract: |
Monitoring took place during construction of a new play area. Evaluation in 2009 had revealed a substantial brick wall base, of possible earlier 17th century date and forming part of the contemporary garden layout of Kew Farm. The groundworks were monitored for any further remains, and to ensure preservation in situ of the historic wall. A series of foundation pits c 400-600mm deep revealed a simple and homogenous soil profile, the subsoil containing occasional fragments of brick but significant finds or features. Natural sandy brickearth was found towards the limit of excavation, in places very shallow and apparently directly overlying River Terrace gravel. |
