Abstract: |
On gently sloping heathland below the rocky granite tor of Carn Kenidjack in St Just is a rich prehistoric landscape which includes a group of holed stones. This report describes repairs to one of the holed stones. First recorded in the nineteenth century, protected through scheduling in the early twentieth century, recumbent for most of the twentieth century but restored in the 1980s, this stone fell and broke again in the twenty-first century. The 1980s restoration of the holed stone involved cementing it together and standing it upright on the ground. Always unstable, it finally fell apart again in 2010. This report describes a more permanent repair, made in August 2010 by pinning the two halves of the stone together with stainless steel pins and mounting on a base. |
