Abstract:
This Archaeological and Cultural Heritage Desk-Based Assessment was prepared on behalf of Sainsbury's Supermarkets Ltd to accompany a full planning application for the development of a new supermarket and associated car parking and infrastructure at Ferry Road, Rye, East Sussex. The site is a primarily hard standing area located to the north-west of Rye, East Sussex. A 500m study area was assessed. There is a low potential to discover previously unrecorded archaeological remains. The site may have been used for breaking ships and boats in the medieval or early post-med periods. The residential houses to be demolished are not of heritage interest. The public house is of limited heritage interest. A survey of the public house prior to demolition was recommended and the nature of archaeologcal evaluation to be determined based on foundation design.
