Abstract:
This archaeological assessment for Wardell Armstrong International of a proposed solar farm at Tregonning, Cornwall, straddling the parishes of St. Enoder to the south and St. Newlyn East to the north, was undertaken by the Projects team of Historic Environment, Cornwall Council. It includes desk-based study, fieldwork, and geophysical survey results. In the potential viewshed up to 5km from the site three Scheduled Monuments have possible inter-visibility with the site. The site is visible from two Listed Buildings (St Enoder church (Grade I) and Retyn farmhouse (Grade II)) and potentially visible from eight other Listed buildings. The site includes or is bordered by thirteen archaeological sites of significance. Those within the proposed area include the site of a post-medieval farm building and rick yard, the district and parish boundary, a field system, and a series of linear ditches and ridge and furrow. Those sites bordering the area include an undated enclosure to the north, two undated banks, the possible site of a Iron Age/Romano-British round, an Iron Age/ Romano-British round, a square enclosure, a prehistoric field system and another Iron Age/Romano-British round. The site is surrounded on all sides by existing settlements of medieval origin. The recommendations set out further work likely to be required to mitigate for the archaeological impact should the development proceed. This includes a geophysical survey. Only half of the recommended area underwent a geophysical survey (added as an addendum). Results show evidence for prehistoric houses and enclosures in the southern half of the site.
