Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on behalf of Taylor Wimpey Midlands at The Maltings Car Park, Church Street, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire (Centred on NGR SK091 335). Watching brief of groundworks was undertaken in two areas.to the south east of the car park in 2010 and to the south west in 2011. To the south west the earliest feature recorded was a sandstone wall which lay parallel to the street at a distance of about 7m and may be surmised to be the back wall of the former building on the frontage or an ancillary building to the rear. Two wells on site were also dated to the 18th Century and were thought to supply buildings previously on the street frontage. A 19th Century cellar and an oven were observed and a number of pits relating to post-medieval activity on the site were also recorded containing 18th - 20th Century material. To the west of the site another 19th Century cellar with a brick floor was observed, cut through a 19th Century made ground. The cellar was backfilled with glass bottles, tiles and brick rubble. This structure had truncated any earlier features on the site. Natural ground was not reached in this area due to the amount of levelling on the site.
