Abstract:
MoLAS-PCA were commissioned by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) to analyse and record a standing building at Unit 1, Vanguard Centre, 16 Marshgate Lane, London E15. The building was to be demolished in order to redevelop the site, and the archaeological investigation and a subsequent report were required as a condition of planning consent for redevelopment. Investigation included a measured survey and photography of the interior, exterior and setting of the building. The building was constructed between 1869 and 1896, and was a large three-storey warehouse built in yellow brick, situated side-on to the street and slightly rhomboidal in plan. The west and east walls contained nine window bays, and the gable ends three window bays. The window openings, dressed with dark blue engineering bricks, had segmentally-arched lintels. An entrance doorway in the centre of the south gable end was fronted by a shallow brick porch. The timber 1st floor and 2nd floor were carried on flitched bridging joists, supported by a central line of cast-iron columns. The interiors may originally have been open on all floors. The building was used by Slater and Palmer Ltd, printing ink manufacturers, who are first recorded as occupying the building in 1882. It was taken over in 1945 by Usher-Walker Ltd, manufacturers of printing ink and rollers. Recently the ground floor was divided by cement block walls, and a number of windows on the gorund floor were blocked. The building most recently housed the 'Celestial Glory Life Church'.
