Abstract: |
A watching brief was carrried out on 9 engineering trenches prior to construction of the props supporting the retained wall façade to the site. In all cases the trenches showed truncated gravel deposits, with only one trench recording a late post-medieval /modern deposit of cess and burnt wood and rubble in section. No archaeological deposits were recorded during subsequent slab removal. The watching brief concludes that virtually all archaeological deposits were removed during the construction of the Chichester House foundations and basement in 1960. |
