Abstract:
A building recording survey was undertaken at the former John Kidd and co. Ink works factory site, 419 Wick Lane London E3. The firm acquired the site in c. 1862 and ceased operations c. 1952. Prior to this a previous ink works of Benjamin Smith and company occupied the site and from 1765, before which a Dye house operated from the late 17th to mid 18th century. The building survey focused on the development of the site from the late 19th century to the mid 20th century. Six buildings (B1 - B6) are described, with a comprehensive written and photographic record made of the core factory building B1 and the boiler house and chimney B4. Elevations, sections and a ground plan were drawn of the two principle buildings, while the remaining were subject to brief written and photographic recording. The report also discusses the history of the firm and the processes involved in manufacture of ink at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, referencing historical descriptions and illustrations, including photographs of several operations. The last use of the site as a fur-processing factory is partially recorded in the photographic archive, including details of surviving machinery.
