Abstract:
This report details the results and working methods of an archaeological evaluation (phase 2) undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd at H. Smith's Yard, Bellefield Road, Fordcroft, Orpington, London Borough of Bromley. The central National Grid Reference is TQ 4668 6757. The evaluation was undertaken between 19th and 28th June 2006. The commissioning client was Green Acre Homes South East Limited, who are seeking planning permission to redevelop the site. The land lies within an area designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument Roman Bath House and Saxon Cemetery (SAM 145). Scheduled Ancient Monument Consent was granted for an archaeological evaluation. Evidence of Roman industrial and possibly agricultural activity was recorded, which may have been associated with the bathhouse to the east, possibly as part of a work yard and horticultural area. No evidence of Anglo-Saxon funerary or settlement activity associated with the cemetry to the northeast was observed. The site had suffered slight post-medieval truncation.
