Abstract: |
Between 21st and 25th May 2007 Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd. carried out an archaeological evaluation on land at the former Harrow Lodge Campus, Hyland Way, Hornchurch. Six evaluation trenches were excavated across the site. In two trenches on the east side of the site and one towards the south-west corner, modern made ground directly overlay natural deposits, suggesting some recent ground modification. In the north-west corner, three 19th century rubbish pits were found in a single trench, cut into a natural subsoil. There also appeared to be a buried 19th century land surface here. This was sealed by modern made ground. A short distance to the south a large cut features exposed in a further trench. This appears to have been a possible pond shown on early Ordnance Survey maps. It had been drained and backfilled, probably during development of the site in the 1930s. No in situ archaeological deposits pre-dating the 19th century were recorded, though residual earlier pottery of medieval and post-medieval date was recovered. |
