Abstract:
An Archaeological watching brief was undertaken on the paved and lawned areas of Tower Green together with the paved area to the northwest of the Bloody Tower. The earliest structure found was a late medieval / early post-medieval stone cellar with possible associated stone walls to southeast. Evidence of several phases of alteratio or rebuilding were observed culminating in the construction of the 17th century walls of the Old Main Guard. The western boundary wall of the Upper Garden was observed to east whilst to the south c.1m of 17th century dumped levelling deposits were found.
