Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeology Limited at 3 New Barn Street, Plaistow, London Borough of Newham, E13. One evaluation trench was excavated across the site, in advance of development of the land into residential property. The trench was excavated to natural deposits. A redbrick drain and crudely built brick wall represented the earliest surviving archaeological features observed and most likely date from the 18th or 19th century. Whilst it is possible that these are from a building that once fronted New Barn Street, the absence of significant structural remains suggests that construction on the site since this time has removed the major structural elements of the older buildings. Late post-medieval and modern dumped deposits sealed these features, suggestive of ground raising across the site as a pre-cursor to modern construction. Also observed was the eastern external wall of the recently demolished structure and associated demolition rubble from this activity.
