Abstract:
A planning application has been made for the erection of two 34.6m to rotor tip wind turbines at Croft West near Truro in an area formerly a large area of open downland siting a number of Bronze Age barrows. Late prehistoric defended farmsteads are also recorded within this area. HE projects undertook an archaeological assessment of the development, including a dba, and a 3Km viewshed analysis to determine potential impacts on the settings of designated and undesignated historic environment assets within this area and on HLC. The findings of the DBA and the viewshed analysis were checked and recorded on the ground using direct observation and digital photography. The viewshed of the proposed development was found to be significantly constrained by prevailing topography and the presence of plantations to the north and west of the site. Potential impacts on the settings of designated heritage assets were found to be very limited, principally being restricted to part of the Scheduled Bosvisack Round to the east. Impacts on undesignated heritage assets within the viewshed of the wind farm were judged to be minor. The northern turbine site is close to that of a ploughed down Bronze Age barrow and may impact upon unrecorded related features, whilst the southern turbine site is adjacent to an undated but possibly late prehistoric cropmark field system. Cable routes to connect the turbines to the National Grid may impact on sub-surface archaeology. The report summarised these impacts and made outline recommendations for archaeological mitigation.
