Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation took place at 75-89 Lancaster Gate, City of Westminster, London W2. In total, 8 trenches were excavated within the gardens of the former hotel. Several features dating to the late 18th to 19th centuries were discovered on the site in the form of a small pit in Trench 1, a quarry or brickearth extraction pit in Trenches 2 and 3, a small brick drain in Trench 3 and a brick lined garden feature in Trench 7. The site was discovered to have been heavily landscaped during the 19th century with made ground deposits directly overlying natural layers. This suggested that the natural horizons had been significantly reduced during the construction of 75-89 Lancaster Gate.
