Abstract: |
EH Level 4 building recording of the northern of the two Stanley Buildings, Pancras Road, King's Cross. The building was constructed as philanthropic housing for the labouring poor in 1864, and is one of two remaining from an estate of five. The estate was built by the Improved Industrial Dwellings Company. The building comprises five storeys, with a flat accessible roof intended for recreation and laundry drying. On each floor were originally four flats, since merged into two. Access is via a central winding staircase leading onto communal balcony areas at each floor. There is no basement. The building is unusual in its employment of an early form of reinforced concrete to create floors, windowsills, lintels and other architectural elements traditionally rendered in stone. |
