Abstract: |
Archaeological excavation on the site of the former Belmont Row Glassworks, targeted on the remains of the early 19th century glass-making cone. Excavation revealed the surviving circuit of the cone wall, but the interior features had been destroyed by later development of the site. Glass-working residues were recovered from a number of dump deposits, as were kiln furniture and pottery wasters from a short-lived pottery that is thought to have preceded the glassworks. The later 19th and early 20th century industrial development of the site was evidenced by a sucession of later building foundations. A large World War 2 air raid shelter for the factory workforce was also recorded.Further work was recommended in order to fully characterise the excavated remains. |
