Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken at Eastington Primary School, Churchend, Gloucestershire. It was undertaken at the instruction of Speller Metcalfe on behalf of Gloucestershire County Council, who intend to construct a new hall and classroom extension with associated services, for which planning permission has been granted with a condition for an archaeological watching brief. The school lies within the hamlet of Churchend between St Michael's Church and the site of a former cloth factory. The project aimed to determine if any significant archaeological deposits were present and if so to indicate what their location, date and nature were. Several features or layers of medieval date were recorded during the watching brief in the footprint of the foul storage tank adjacent to the River Frome. These include two ditches and several make up layers. The function of the ditches is uncertain though they may have been to manage water as they are close to Churchend Mill, the site of the moated manor house and the River Frome. The medieval make up layers may represent an attempt to reclaim land from the river's flood plain or to canalize the river to allow easier water management. Several medieval spreads were also recorded in the southeast end of the foul storage tank trench and a large shallow pit which remains undated. A sandstone ashlar wall was also recorded in the foul storage tank trench has an uncertain date. The ashlar blocks have been reused from an earlier building, possibly the moated manor house demolished in 1778. A single Victorian brick was found under an ashlar block suggests the structure may have been demolished in the Victorian era. Another wall, located in the service trenches for the foul storage tank, is of the same construction but it remains uncertain if the two walls are the same. This wall contains similar ashlar blocks and therefore the same potential date of 1778.
