Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken at the New Garden of Remembrance, Bourton-on-Water, Gloucestershire (SP 1718 2080). It was undertaken at the instruction of Paul Gajos of CgMs Consulting Ltd on behalf of their clients, Bourton-on-the-Water Parish Council. The Clients intend to construct a garden of remembrance on land adjoining the existing cemetery in Bourton-on-the-Water, which lies within Salmonsbury camp, a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The watching brief methodology was designed to ensure that the on-site contractors maintain an agreed depth during works and therefore preserving archaeological deposits known to survive in the footprint of the cemetery extension. As part of this a level survey of the site was taken before and after the topsoil strip on a one metre grid and levels were checked throughout the process. No groundworks exceeded the depth of the topsoil existing on the site, a garden soil surviving from the allotments that were formerly on the site. No archaeological features were recorded and natural deposits were not encountered. A small assemblage of pottery was recovered from the topsoil that included abraded Roman sherds. |
