Abstract: |
Historic building recording, and monitoring and recording of groundworks were carried out under conditions attached to various planning permissions for alterations to the property. Kigbeare Manor Farm may well occupy the site of an old manorial settlement documented in the Domesday Book and the potential therefore existed for the survival of below-ground archaeological remains in the vicinity of the farmhouse which may reflect medieval or earlier settlement. It was established that the farmhouse was the oldest building on the site and on the evidence of the roof structure dates to the late 17th century, and probably no later than 1700. The building has a three-room and cross passage plan, with later additions to the rear. The roof is the oldest visible part of the house, although it is possible that earlier (datable) features remain undiscovered. Archaeological evidence was found for an earlier house on the site in the form of reused architectural fragments. The dating and development of the farm buildings was also established. |
