Abstract:
This project comprises a desk-based study, with subsequent extensive survey of the River Severn from the City of Worcester southwards as far as Tewkesbury, an overall length of 29km. The River Severn is increasingly forming a focus for aggregate extraction and recent developments suggest a trend towards the use of the river as a sustainable transport route for movement of extracted gravel and sand. This project will, therefore, fulfil ASLF objectives being in support of the development of conservation strategies for the historic environment, and primarily of the promotion of environmentally friendly transportation of aggregates, through the development of a better understanding of the historic environment of the river for the benefit of future management of the river corridor. The current project stage (desktop) will enhance the archaeological record of the southern half of the River Severn in Worcestershire, through the collection and integration of information from a variety of sources, including the county HER, County Record Office, aerial photographic collections, and academic research. This is intended to lead to an overview of the changing river to the present-day based on a record of all known archaeological sites on the riverbank and foreshore, and, as far as possible, within the river bed, with an appreciation of where current threats to this archaeological resource may exist.
