Abstract:
Archaeological monitoring was carried out by Oakford Archaeology in the churchyard of St Mary's, Dunsford, Devon (SX 8130 8920), between October and December 2011. The work comprised the monitoring of construction works associated with a new vestry. Groundworks exposed the remains of two pre-Victorian graves in the area immediately to the north of the church tower. The works also exposed the relationship between the tower and the later north aisle. The dismantling of a 15h century window in the north aisle was also monitored. The observations and recording at St Mary's church have provided important and new information about the structural development of the building. The works have shown that the northern arcade is built on the line of the original north wall of the north aisle and that the eastern side of the stair turret was originally an external face. Following the construction of the north aisle in the 15th century the eastern wall of the stair turret became encased in the wall of the north aisle. No evidence was found during the works to date the construction of the tower.
