Abstract:
South West Archaeology undertook a programme of historic building recording and archaeological monitoring in advance of and during the redevelopment of the dilapidated farmhouse and buildings at Combe Farm, Jacobstowe, Devon. The farmhouse, a Grade II listed 17th century building, proved on examination to be a much-modified 18th century two-cell domestic building. This building had been repaired many times with cob, stone, brick and concrete, and the central section had entirely collapsed following the failure of its roof. The only 17th century elements in the structure were the reused beams supporting the first floor and part of a window frame. The archaeological monitoring demonstrated that floor levels both within and outside the farmhouse had been significantly reduced, leaving the walls standing on raised plinths of subsoil. The finds from the site were largely 18th or 19th century in date. Associated with the farmhouse was a 19th century stable, a late 19th century Dutch barn and a small threshing barn, the first phase of which was probably contemporary with the farmhouse.
