Abstract:
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken during the replacement of a stretch of retaining wall on the north side of the churchyard at Tarbolton Parish Church. Works revealed an earlier retaining wall, forming a revetment to the pre-existing land form. The backfill behind this wall revealed ceramics and bottle glass of late 18th/early 19th century date, suggesting that it was contemporary with the building of the modern church structure. A layer of disarticulated human bone was also present in this backfill. The space between the earlier and later wall structures had been backfilled with material that contained clay tobacco pipe fragments and and sherds of later nineteenth century ceramics. Two burials had been inserted into this later infill, cutting the earlier retaining wall in both cases.
