Abstract:
In 2005 excavation of Iron Age settlement and part of a Roman farming settlement took place in advance of development, following earlier geophysical survey and trial excavation. A principal east west bank and ditch existed with late Iron Age roundhouses close by. The boundary included an important crossing point in use till the 1st century AD. In the late 1st century the Iron Age entrance was slighted, the former ditches incorporated into a new enclosure and a new roundhouse was built with a pottery kiln close by. The land was probably incorporated in a larger agrarian settlement by the mid 2nd century, defined by a large enclosure with a small cemetery along its western perimeter. a stone-roofed building was present with other timber buildings. In the late 4th century habitation moved elsewhere and the land was reorganised into smaller enclosures, the final stage of development.
