Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken from February to May 2012 during groundworks for a new wood pellet heating system at Pluscarden Abbey, Morayshire. The level of most of the land involved had been raised considerably in the 20th c. and all the observed works took place within this. No archaeological features were encountered. A trench approximately 750mm deep, opened to bring heat to the abbey buildings from the new boiler house, was wholly contained within this redeposited material, which was found to contain a remarkable number of modern cables, gas pipes and drains. No further archaeological work is recommended in this area of the site unless future works require much deeper excavation. |
