Abstract:
Headland Archaeology Ltd was commissioned by Griffin Wind Farm Ltd to carry out a programme of archaeological works in advance of the construction of the wind farm. This phase of works included the survey of two abandoned townships - Blairnabuiag and Riebeg - located in the eastern part of the development area. The area was planted for commercial forestry in the 1980s. The core of the township at Blairnabuiag, although bisected by a forestry track, was preserved within a large clearing. A large part of its head-dyke and internal dykes and enclosures have also been preserved in rides or between plough furrows. The township at Riebeg, however, was less well preserved, possibly due to quarrying of its stone for the construction of a mid-19th century sheepfold and dykes nearby. Documentary evidence indicates that the townships originated as shielings, probably established in the 17th century, that were subsequently developed as permanent settlements during the third quarter of the 18th century. The settlements, however, were short-lived and were abandoned in the early 19th century, when the area was given over to intensive sheep-farming.
