Abstract:
A programme of archaeological works was carried out during the construction of a high pressure natural gas pipeline running from Burnhervie to Old Rayne. The programme of works consisted of a watching brief undertaken during soil stripping operations and subsequent mitigation works relating to the features uncovered. The watching brief led to the discovery of eight concentrations of archaeological features (Site 1 to Site 8) as well as a number of isolated features. These largely consisted of pits and linear ditches of varying sizes. Material recovered from several of the sites suggests that these concentrations of features are likely to be prehistoric in date, while some did not contain any datable artefacts. Finds uncovered included prehistoric pottery, lithics and a saddle quern.
